Hello everyone! Sara here and I’m starting my exciting new experimental series where I explore the world of Artificial Intelligence. My aim is to figure out exactly how AI can help a small business owner like me
Everyone is talking about AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude and how they can help with efficiency and automation. I have looked into this and didn’t realise that there were different types of AI! They are grouped together like families, all related but specialise in different things.
I thought it might be helpful to start at the beginning and share with you what I have discovered- what are the four families of AI?
1. Reactive Machines- Where it started.
This is the most basic form of AI. Reactive Machines operate only in the present moment. They can analyse a situation and make the best possible move, but they have absolutely no memory of past interactions and cannot learn from experience or look ahead.
Small Business Usefulness: You won’t often use a purely reactive machine directly, as most modern free tools have surpassed this level. However, they demonstrate the foundational ability of AI to analyse vast data and execute a single, perfect decision instantly.
Big Picture: This is the most basic part of Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI)—AI designed for one specific task.
This is the type of AI that powers nearly every tool you use right now. Limited Memory AI is sophisticated because it can store past data (memory) for a short period—usually the length of a conversation or a single session—to make informed predictions and decisions. This “memory” is what makes the interaction feel intelligent.
2. Limited Memory AI: What businesses are using today.
What They Do:
Small Business Usefulness: Limited Memory AI is your secret weapon for efficiency and growth. It can help you with:
Content Creation: Tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude use your prompts and the context of the current chat to generate relevant blog posts, email drafts, and social media captions, saving you hours of writing time.
Customer Service: Chatbots (Limited Memory AI) remember what the customer just asked, allowing them to provide a coherent, step-by-step resolution.
Recommendations: Your favourite e-commerce site uses this AI to recommend “customers who bought X also bought Y” based on recent browsing data.
The Big Picture: This is still part of Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI). While incredibly versatile and powerful, it only operates within the context it was designed for; it can’t react unless ‘prompted’ to do so by humans.
This AI is purely theoretical and does not yet exist. A Theory of Mind AI would be capable of understanding that humans (and other entities) have beliefs, desires, intentions, and emotions that influence their decisions.
3. Theory of Mind AI: The Future Relationship Manager.
What They Do:
- Small Business Usefulness (Future): If this AI were available, it would revolutionise customer and employee relations.
- Imagine: A CRM that doesn’t just suggest a product but suggests how to approach a customer because it understands their stress levels, urgency, and current mood based on their communication tone.
- Goal: This level of intelligence is a step toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)—AI that can match human intelligence and consciousness.
4. Self-Aware AI: The AI that appears in the movies.
What They Do:
This is the final, most complex, and purely hypothetical type of AI. A Self-Aware AI would not only understand the feelings of others (like Theory of Mind AI) but would also possess consciousness, self-awareness, and a sense of self. This is what us humans have been using to determine intelligence and categorise species within the animal kingdom.
- Small Business Usefulness: We are no where near this stage, and it currently belongs only in science fiction. If it existed, its intelligence would be Artificial Superintelligence (ASI), surpassing human capabilities in every domain.
- Don’t Worry: This isn’t something you need to think about. Focus your energy on the amazing tools that exist today.
Action Plan: Focus on Limited Memory AI (ANI)
For small business owners focused on efficiency, time-saving, and improving customer offers, your should be focussing on harnessing Limited Memory AI (ANI).
Some of the free tools available right now that are powerful, accessible, and ready to automate those time-consuming tasks:
| Business Goal | Free Limited Memory AI Tools |
| Content Creation | ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copy.ai |
| Scheduling & Automation | Zapier (Free Tier), Reclaim.ai (Free Tier) |
| Customer Support | Tidio (Free Plan), Freshchat (Free Tier) |
| Visual Design | Canva (Free AI Features), Adobe Express (Free Tier) |
Conclusion: The AI revolution is here, but it’s not a scary, self-aware robot. It’s a suite of incredibly useful tools designed for specific, targetted tasks that can transform your business efficiency overnight. The truth is, however, that if you are not using AI in your business you can bet your competitors are!
My advice is that whilst there are plenty of useful tools to use in your business, it hasn’t replaced human intelligence and thinking, yet. There is still a place for our ingenuity and creativity and the best scenario is to work hand in hand with AI to make your ideas even better or speed up your processes.
What’s Next in the Series?
So, my business is focused on helping small businesses with their marketing so I am going to start with the tools that can help in this area.
From talking with my clients and other small businesses, the biggest sticking point when marketing their business is – lack of time.
I’m going to explore tools that can help with the time that has to be invested into business marketing. First on the list is content strategy and planning.
Follow my journey so you can learn which tools are worth your time and which ones are just hype!
I would love to hear from you, what are you looking for AI to help you with? Let me know and I can include it in my series.
